Living in the Cayman Islands: The Advantages and Disadvantages, With Sources
No direct tax, a pegged dollar, low violent crime and 84% quality-of-life satisfaction, against rents up 8.9% in a year, high electricity and school costs, traffic, hurricanes, rising recorded crime and a nine-year work permit. Each side sourced; the weighing left to the reader.

Living in the Cayman Islands means no income tax, a currency pegged to the US dollar, low violent crime and an 84% quality-of-life satisfaction rate in the Government's own survey, set against rents that rose 8.9% in a year, an average electricity bill of several hundred dollars a month, private school fees of CI$16,000 to 31,000 a year, a hurricane season that runs half the year, and a work permit that expires after nine years. What the residents say
The Economics and Statistics Office's quality-of-life survey for Fall 2025 recorded 84.0% of residents satisfied with their quality of life (ESO news, 20 March 2026). The population grew 2.0% in 2025 to 90,577, after 4.8% growth in 2024, and unemployment was 2.6% (ESO, Labour Force Survey Fall 2025). Those are the headline numbers behind the pros; the cons are mostly about what that growth has done to prices and roads.
The advantages
No direct taxation
The Government's economy page states: "There are no direct taxes in the Cayman Islands. There is no income tax, company or corporation tax, inheritance tax, capital gains or gift tax. There are no property taxes or rates." PwC's summary reviewed 29 May 2026 records personal income tax, corporate tax and capital gains tax as not applicable. A salary is paid gross, and the only statutory deductions are the employee's half of the health insurance premium and up to 5% pension. The revenue side is import duty and stamp duty, which is why the cost of goods and of buying a home carries the weight instead; the property tax guide sets out what applies.
A pegged currency and a stable banking sector
The Cayman Islands dollar has been pegged at CI$1 to US$1.20 since 1974 and is issued by the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority under the Currency Law. Salaries in CI$ therefore hold their US-dollar value, which matters to anyone with obligations abroad. Six retail banks serve residents, and Butterfield opens accounts online for residents in about fifteen minutes (Cayman Independent); the hub guide lists the documents each asks for.
Low violent crime
The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service's 2025 report, released 22 April 2026, recorded 59 serious violent offences, down 16%, with a 56% detection rate; burglaries down 31%; 30 firearms offences; and six fatal road collisions against eleven in 2024. The Commissioner described major crime as stable. The con sits in the same report and is listed below.
Healthcare on the island
The Health Services Authority's Anthony S. Eden Hospital in George Town has 136 beds, an accident and emergency department, four operating theatres, critical care, dialysis and oncology (HSA); Health City Cayman Islands is a private tertiary hospital in East End with a Camana Bay site; Doctors Hospital is a private hospital in George Town. Health insurance is mandatory and employer-provided from the first day of employment at a minimum of the Standard Health Insurance Contract, approximately CI$167 per person per month, of which the employer may recover half (Health Insurance Commission). For a newcomer from a country with waiting lists, care is close and insured; for one from a country with public healthcare, the premium and the dependant cost are new.
Air links
Cayman Airways flies non-stop to Miami, Tampa, New York JFK, Denver and Los Angeles, seasonally to Austin, and to Kingston, Montego Bay, Havana, La Ceiba and Panama City, as well as to Cayman Brac and Little Cayman (Cayman Airways, January 2026). Fares are not published by any primary source and change daily, so none is quoted here.
Driving on a home licence, then exchanging it
A new resident drives on a valid foreign licence for twelve months. Holders of licences from the United Kingdom, Gibraltar, Guernsey, the Isle of Man and Jersey exchange without a written test within that period; others sit the written test; the transfer fee is CI$50 (Department of Vehicle and Drivers' Licensing).
A path to permanent residence and beyond
After eight years of legal and ordinary residence a work-permit holder may apply for permanent residence under section 37(1) of the Immigration (Transition) Act, scored on points across nine factors with a 110-point threshold, and a permanent resident may apply for the right to be Caymanian after twenty years including ten holding PR. The disadvantages
Rent, and the pace of rent
Asking rents for a one-bedroom run from CI$900 in West Bay to CI$4,000 on Seven Mile Beach, and for a two-bedroom from CI$1,900 in Bodden Town to CI$5,500 on the beach (Cayman Resident, 17 February 2026). The ESO's index of rents actually paid rose 8.9% in the year to December 2025, the largest movement in the housing division, and Provenance Properties' second-quarter 2026 report put rents 9% above a year earlier. Against a median non-Caymanian monthly wage of CI$2,799.50 (ESO), a George Town one-bedroom at CI$1,800 is 64% of income. There is no rent control. The rent guide has the full tables.
Electricity
The average household used 1,158 kWh a month in 2025, and the Caribbean Utilities Company's rate changes of 1 June 2026 added about CI$50 a month to that bill even after a Government fuel-relief credit that runs to 30 September 2026 (Radio Cayman; Cayman News Service). At the June 2026 components compiled by Daily.ky, about CI$0.346 per kWh all in, that household pays roughly CI$400 a month, and air conditioning is 50% to 75% of most homes' consumption (Cayman Resident). Inflation, and where it is heading
Inflation was 1.3% for 2025 and 2.8% in the first quarter of 2026, with food up 3.8% in the year to December 2025 and communication up 17.0% in the first quarter (ESO). In May 2026 the Government's projection for the year was raised from 2.6% to 5.3% on fuel costs (Cayman Compass). Nearly everything is imported, and import duty is inside every price.
School fees
Government schools admit Caymanian children first and expatriate children where space allows, at CI$750 to 1,200 a year (Cayman Parent, November 2025, summarising the Department of Education Services). Most expatriate families use private schools: Cayman Prep charges CI$15,885 to 20,160 a year for 2026 to 2027 and Cayman International School CI$22,000 to 30,700. For a family with two children this line is often the largest in the budget.
Traffic
Grand Cayman had 50,343 licensed vehicles for about 90,000 people in mid-2025 and 65,295 valid driving licences (Cayman Resident). The National Roads Authority projects 28,000 vehicles a day through the Grand Harbour junction by 2036, up 57%, and describes it as the main cause of rush-hour congestion for commuters from the eastern districts (Cayman News Service, April 2024). The East-West Arterial extension opened in September 2025. Cheaper rent in the eastern districts is paid for in the commute.
Hurricanes
The season runs from 1 June to 30 November. Hazard Management Cayman Islands advises preparing to be without electricity and water for a minimum of seven days. Hurricane Ivan passed about 21 miles south-west of George Town on 11 and 12 September 2004 with winds near 155 mph and a storm surge of 8 to 12 feet, damaging most buildings on Grand Cayman; the 2026 seasonal forecast from Colorado State University was below normal at nine named storms, four hurricanes and one major. Insurance deductibles for named storms, strata reserve funds and shutters are the recurring cost of that history; a home insurance premium attracts stamp duty of CI$12 plus 2% (Cayman Resident, July 2026).
Crime that is rising
The same RCIPS report that shows violent crime stable records robberies up 55% with a 29% detection rate, sexual offences up 20% with 58% involving child victims, and 3,408 motor-vehicle collisions, up 5%. Cayman Independent's summary of the report gives 4,736 recorded crimes in 2025 against 4,218 in 2024, a 13% rise, with public-order offences up 37%; that total is from a secondary summary; this site has not yet confirmed it against the RCIPS PDF.
The permit, the employer and the clock
Residence rests on a work permit that the employer holds, not the employee. From 1 May 2026 a first-time permit holder may not change employer within two years of the grant, and employers must report a termination to WORC within seven days (Ministry Guidebook, 29 April 2026). The worker term limit is nine years under section 66(1); after it, a person "will not normally be granted any form of work permit until they have ceased to be resident in the Cayman Islands for at least one year" (Cayman Resident) unless a permanent-residence application is pending. Adding a spouse or child to the permit requires CI$5,000 a month of gross income plus CI$1,000 for each further dependant. The term-limit guide and the roll-over calculator turn the clock into dates.
A long, points-based road to staying
The permanent-residence application after eight years is scored against Schedule 2 of the Immigration Regulations: 110 points from nine factors, of which nationality is scored by work-permit share (law-firm commentary places Jamaican and Filipino nationals, the two largest permit populations, in the zero-point tier; the Factor 8 guide sets out the rule and the rulings) and community involvement is earned year by year inside an eight-year window. The application fee is CI$1,500 to 5,000 depending on the permit's fee band, and permanent residents file a CI$250 annual declaration. The road to Caymanian status is twenty years. Size
The population is 90,577. There are 17 private schools, three hospitals and one main road east. For some households that is the point; for others it is the reason they leave at year three. The Sister Islands are smaller again: a median rent paid of CI$600 a month, an 18-bed hospital, and premium petrol at CI$6.96 an imperial gallon on Little Cayman in May 2026 (ESO; HSA; OfReg).
